Rockwell, Elizabeth (American, 1835-1911) Oil on canvas painting of a young boy signed E. A. Rockwell (lower right). A recent painting of the artist sold in 2013 for $15,000 at Bonhams. Born in New York on March 24, 1835. Rockwell began painting at age eight while enrolled in the public schools in her native state. She completed her education at Troy Conference Academy in Fulton, VT where she studied drawing and painting. The years 1868-71 were spent in Brussels as a pupil of Professor François, and while pursuing art studies, she visited various art centers on the Continent. In 1873 she left New York via the overland railroad to San Francisco where she established a studio at 103 Montgomery and quickly became prominent in the local art scene. Her landscapes were praised by the local press, and in 1875 she painted several horse pictures for the Bonanza Company which attracted much attention. She was awarded a diploma for painting Coming Out of the Valley which was sent to Santiago, Chile and a diploma from the Mechanics' Institute for finest miniature painting. She made several trips back to visit her family in New York and, while there in 1884, received a commission from the state to paint a portrait of ex-U.S. Treasurer Folger for the state capitol at Albany. Upon returning to her adopted state, she received a similar commission for a portrait of the late Governor Bartlett for the state capitol at Sacramento. During the 1890s she and Gideon Denny painted a series of San Francisco Bay scenes on zinc for the ferries. A spinster, Rockwell was active in San Francisco until 1905 and then moved to Los Angeles where she died on Dec. 22, 1911. Weight 22 pounds.

Condition: The Painting is in excellent condition- no chips, cracks, or restoration. The frame is in good condition. Some chips and scratches & signs of display wear. The painting is slightly separated from the frame on the lower right hand side.
